Dental Hygienist Treatment

Gum Disease Treatment in Tunbridge Wells and Brighton & Hove

Here at The Town House Dental Practice we are pleased to offer expert dental hygienist treatment.

Much of our gum disease treatment is carried out by our dental hygienist in a welcoming and relaxed environment. All of our patients are screened regularly for gum disease during their regular dental check ups.

What is a dental hygiene treatment?

A dental hygiene treatment is a preventive dental procedure performed by a dental hygienist. During this treatment, the hygienist removes plaque, tartar, and stains from the teeth using specialized instruments. They also perform a thorough examination of the teeth and gums to detect any signs of gum disease or other oral health issues. Additionally, the hygienist may provide personalised oral hygiene instructions and recommendations to help patients maintain optimal oral health between dental visits. Dental hygiene treatments are essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums and preventing dental problems such as cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.

Why see a dental hygienist?

A dental hygienist will specifically treat gum disease. Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease will require treatment to restore gums to their optimum health. This is not only to ensure the health of your mouth but also to prevent major health problems from occurring as a result of periodontal disease.

Whether or not you have experienced gum disease treatment before, it is important to know that our dental hygienist team has a gentle approach to gum disease treatment. In addition, you don’t need to be registered with our dentist to get a dental hygiene cleaning appointment at our dental practice – see below for more information about direct access.

We also offer a FREE virtual consultation, simply send us a photo of your smile and any dental concerns you may have and one of our dentists will recommend the best treatments for you before scheduling a face-to-face dental hygiene appointment at our dental practice.

Air Polishing at The Town House

We are pleased to introduce Air Polishing as a new treatment option at both our Brighton and Tunbridge Wells practices. This advanced dental cleaning technique uses a fine mixture of air, water, and powder to effectively remove plaque, stains, and surface discolouration from your teeth. Unlike traditional methods, Air Polishing is designed to be less abrasive, making it an excellent choice for patients with sensitive teeth or those seeking a more comfortable and thorough cleaning experience.

Air Polishing is particularly effective at tackling tough stains and discolouration, leaving your teeth looking noticeably brighter. The gentle spray is kind to your gums, minimising irritation and making the procedure more comfortable, especially for those with sensitive gums. Additionally, the treatment is quick, often requiring less time in the chair compared to traditional cleaning methods, and it reaches areas that conventional tools might miss, providing a more comprehensive clean.

Experience the difference of a fresh, polished smile with Air Polishing at your next hygiene visit

Direct access to your Dental Hygienist

You now have the option of booking an appointment to see your dental hygienist directly without needing to see the dentist first. We have two hygienists working at the Town House Dental Practice who can see you without you having to see the dentist first.

At your appointment, your dental hygienist will complete a thorough examination of your mouth and will undertake any gum disease treatment necessary that falls within their “Scope of Practice”. This sometimes may require further appointments.

Scope of practice

Dental hygienists practising under Direct Access are not expected to make a diagnosis or provide treatment outside of their “Scope of Practice”. Dental hygienists are not all expected to practise under Direct Access, only those whose training, including postgraduate training, enables them to do so. The choice to see a dental hygienist directly remains entirely with you. You are still welcome to book an appointment with your dentist in the normal way.

Dental Hygienist Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What does a dental hygienist do?

A dental hygienist can screen your mouth for any early signs of gum disease, or periodontitis. They can also offer gingivitis and gum disease treatment as well as tooth decay treatment.

  2. Why is it important to take care of your gums?

Neglecting your gum health can lead to gum disease, which causes the gums to become swollen and sore. If left untreated, periodontal disease can worsen over time and cause teeth to become loose and even fall out.

  3. I'm a nervous patient, how can you help me?

We want all of our patients to feel totally comfortable during their appointments, so we can offer a number of solutions to put you at ease. Get in touch with our team in Tunbridge Wells to see how we can help you.
